That opening scene "Serving absolutely no purpose other than to remind the audience that they are in fact watching a horror movie" was such a waste of screentime. Love how the car conveniently breaks down at the diner after no apparent fault in the first 15 mins too haha
I’ve never cared for this franchise, although the premise could be developed into something cool, perhaps even humorous, like You’re Next. It’s just suspenseless kills and nihilism for the sake of nihilism.
Agreed. It feels weird when talking about horror, but The Strangers has a particular nastiness to it that is wholly unpleasant.
The original always felt like an extended version of the lake scene in Fincher’s Zodiac which I hate even thinking about it’s so uncomfortable. Unpleasantness for unpleasantness sake is well…unpleasant! And the whole time in Chapter 1 I was hoping for it to flip into You’re Next, although I suspect that will be the case in the coming sequels.
Although I will say, I love horror that takes safe places away. What IT did for drains and Elm Street did for dreams, the line “Because you were home” is arguably one of the most frightening deliveries in horror history.

Genuinely could have doubled this review length if I picked everything that really annoyed me! Had to go with only the most egregious haha
They're still doing shit like this? Who voluntarily watches such foolishness?
Remember when Rennie Harlin was supposed to be some kind of big shot? I can't even remember how to spell his name.
